Highlands is one of our favorite spots in North Carolina! It’s a small and very charming mountain town tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the western part of the state. The closest major airports are Atlanta (ATL), Asheville (AVL), and Charlotte (CLT).

The Asheville Regional Airport is 57 miles (1.5 hours) away, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is 160 miles (3.25 hours) away, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is 140 miles (2.5 hours) away.

We are more than happy to advise on optimal times to arrive and fly out of Charlotte! Highway traffic out of Charlotte and Atlanta on weekday afternoons and evenings can get heavier, but there should be no problems with traffic returning to any of these airports on Sunday after the wedding.

Accommodations

Old Edwards Inn & Spa

Located right in the heart of downtown Highlands, Old Edwards is a beautiful, luxurious resort that feels like a little European getaway. It has cozy rooms, a world-class spa, and amazing restaurants, plus it’s just steps from shops and cafes. If you're looking to treat yourself while you're here, this is a perfect spot. Shuttles will pick up and drop off guests Saturday at this hotel.

200 Main

Just down the street from Old Edwards, 200 Main offers a modern mountain vibe that’s both stylish and laid-back. The rooms are super comfortable (think fireplaces and heated bathroom floors), and there’s a fun game room, fire pits, and even a heated outdoor pool. It’s a great choice for a relaxed stay right in town and shuttles will pick up and drop off guests Saturday at this location.

Modern hotel room with a large bed, nightstands, lamps, artwork, a seating area with chairs and a table, and a television.

The Lofts on Main

These apartments are perfectly located on Main Street just across the street from the Old Edwards Inn and are spacious and beautifully designed. They have everything from studios to two-bedroom apartments complete with a full kitchen. They capture the Western North Carolina style so perfectly and will get you in the mountain mindset!

A large blue house with multiple windows, a stone foundation, and a small balcony with the initials 'H M H' on it. There are three white umbrellas and outdoor seating in front of the house, surrounded by trees with orange and yellow fall leaves.

Highlander Mountain House

Set in a beautifully restored 1880s house right on Main Street, the Highlander Mountain House is cozy, charming, and full of character. The rooms feel like a stylish mountain cottage, and the on-site restaurant is a favorite for delicious meals and cocktails. It’s a wonderful spot for guests who want a boutique stay with Highlands’ shops and cafes just steps away.

Half Mile Farm

Half Mile Farm is a charming luxury inn surrounded by meadows and a tranquil lake, but it’s still within walking distance of downtown Highlands. With elegant country style, peaceful scenery, and exceptional service, it’s a perfect setting to unwind while still being close to town.

Living room with a stone fireplace, wooden ceiling, large windows showing greenery outside, and various chairs and sofas.

Outpost Inn

This chic and modern inn brings a fresh take on mountain lodging, with stylish rooms that mix clean design and rustic touches. Outpost Inn is super close to town, making it easy to pop over for shopping or dining. Guests love the welcoming vibe, comfortable beds, and thoughtful details throughout—great for those looking for a contemporary mountain retreat.

Skyline Lodge

Skyline Lodge is a revamped motel property that offers a cozy yet refined retreat within driving distance of downtown Highlands. It’s super stylish with a very creative midcentury modern design and has a great dining option with Oak Steakhouse onsite. It’s also got great views!

Trailborn Highlands

One of the newest options in town, Trailborn Highlands blends retro lodge vibes with modern comforts. The rooms are bright and thoughtfully designed, and there’s a fun outdoor pool area plus fire pits for evening hangouts. Just a short walk or drive from downtown, it’s perfect if you want a lively, social atmosphere during your stay.

Airbnb & VRBO

There are lots of lovely homes in the surrounding area, so weekend rentals are a great option! Just be wary that the mountain roads can be narrow and winding, so drive with caution, especially at night!

Food & Wine

Dining in Highlands and the surrounding area combines small-town charm with local farm flavors, and features everything from cozy, casual spots to award-winning fine dining options. Here are just a few of our favorites:

Things to Do

A large stone house with a chimney and expansive lawn, surrounded by trees and mountains, with a bocce ball court and planted flowers in the foreground.
  • This family-owned restaurant serves some of the best Italian we’ve ever had, and it’s located conveniently on Main Street in Highlands across from the Old Edwards Inn. Reservations are strongly encouraged here!

    440 Main Street

  • Located slightly down the hill in Cashiers, this is a one-of-a-kind farm-to-table dining experience with unbeatable views. This is where Tom proposed! Try to book this one in advance because they are very popular.

    150 Lonesome Valley Road

  • Another farm-to-table option with a spectacular setting, Julep is down the hill in Georgia and has farm animals to pet, shopping, and delicious food. Stop by for brunch or dinner! They also have a coffee shop and an ice cream bar, so it doesn’t need to be meal time to go explore this property, which is rich with farm animals.

    500 GA-246, Dillard, Georgia

  • This is a very popular pub located right in town near the Old Edwards Inn. It’s got a relaxed atmosphere but great food, plus there are endless photos of dogs on the wall, so you can’t help but be happy inside!

    294 South 4th Street

  • Our favorite breakfast spot! It’s super laid back, lots of dogs on the patio, and you can stock up on snacks for your room while you’re there.

    521 Main Street

  • We’re hoping it’s a great weekend to spend some time outdoors, so this wine garden is an excellent place to unwind and enjoy some light bites and drinks! It’s a very relaxing setting with calming water features, located right on Main Street in front of the Inn.

    445 Main Street

  • On the other end of Main Street, closer to 200 Main, is an adorable wine shop with a front garden where you can taste wines and spend some more time outdoors enjoying the scenery.

    269 Oak Street

Shop & See

Highlands is an excellent place to spend a weekend wandering. You can explore the unique shops as well as the art galleries and beyond. Here are a few spots we always try to stop in while we’re in town:

A small-town street with storefronts, trees with autumn leaves, parked cars, and a lamp post.
  • Monkee’s is a clothing boutique that has locations in many towns across the Southeast, but each one is individually owned so it gets to reflect the specific area’s style.

    383 Main Street

  • This uniquely-curated shop offers so many fun things, including gifts, snacks, skincare, and books, just to name a few.

    322 Main Street

  • TJ Bailey’s is a high-end men’s clothing store that is always fun to peruse.

    343C Main Street

  • This shop transports you to the wild west, complete with so many mountain chic hat styles and abilities to customize and make something completely your own.

    221 North 4th Street

  • This is a unique home goods store filled with quirky pieces across various styles. You’ll definitely see something in here you haven’t seen before!

    460 Main Street

  • Tiho Trichkov is a Bulgarian wildlife and travel photographer who calls Highlands home and has photographed the Blue Ridge Mountains in spectacular fashion. Stop by to see his incredible selection of imagery from all over the world.

    353 Main Street

  • If you find yourself in Cashiers, you have to go see the amazing art at this gallery, including that of artist extraordinaire Wendy Bilas!

    96 NC-107

  • On wedding day, the attire will be black tie, which means tuxedos for men and longer gowns or other formal attire for women.

For our welcome celebration Friday night before the wedding, the dress code is cocktail attire, so think festive, polished, and party-ready. Western wear will be encouraged!

  • Highlands sits at an elevation of over 4,000 feet, which means the summer is refreshingly cooler than much of the Southeast. In August, you can expect mostly sunny days with highs in the 70s, and mornings and evenings bring in cooler air in the 50s or 60s.

Highlands is actually located in a temperate rainforest so rain showers are certainly possible. We’d recommend bringing a light rain jacket or umbrella, although hopefully you won’t need it!

  • While we love your little ones, we kindly request that our wedding be an adults-only celebration. We hope this gives you the chance to relax, enjoy a night out, and celebrate with us to the fullest. Our venue can help arrange child care at night if you decide to bring your kids to Highlands for the weekend!

  • If weather allows, our cocktail hour will be held outdoors in a grassy reception area adjacent to the ceremony space. The ceremony and reception will both be indoors, but in spaces that can be opened up to the outdoors if it’s a nice evening. Block heels are recommended if we do spend some time in the grass!

  • Yes. We will have shuttles departing from the Old Edwards Inn and 200 Main in downtown Highlands, so no one is required to drive to the venue, but if you wish to do so, there will be parking onsite. The venue is only about 10 minutes outside of downtown.
